Try this breathing exercise for calming the nervous system -- First, take a deep breath into your belly, and then exhale slowly, like you are blowing through a straw. Experiment if you can make your exhale slightly longer than your inhale, as this communicates to your nervous system to move into the parasympathetic nervous system or "rest and digest" state. A few rounds of this type of deep breathing can be transforming.
